Why does my candle wick mushroom?

Occasionally soy candles can produce an effect on cotton wicks known as 'mushrooming' or also known as excess carbon which causes a mushroom shape to form at the end of the candle wick after burning.

This is the result of excess carbon buildup (wax/ fragrance) and is also characterized by a flame that burns very bright because it may consume more wax than it can burn.

Whilst this is normal with a candle it can be frustrating at times as it makes your candle flicker and may burn unevenly, there are ways to avoid this.

Firstly, make sure you give the wick a quick trim to 5mm before lighting - think of it like grooming your candle for its best performance. This will help prevent mushrooming occurring in the first place.

Burning your candle for too long can also cause mushrooming. So, keep it to a max burn time of 3-4hrs.

If you are mid burn and it has started to ‘mushroom’, blow out candle, give it a quick trim and safely relight to continue your burning.

If you have placed your candle near a door way where there seems to be a lot drafts flowing through, this can make your flame flicker which also can result in mushrooming and an uneven burn.

You will find our wicker trimmer and candle snuffer available to purchase online and will assist in maintaining your candle wick.
